To commemorate the 50th anniversary of the release of "Asterix at the Olympic Games," a copy has been donated to The British Film Institute's National Archive for preservation and restoration work. This is a charitable project being undertaken in memory of producer Paulo Branco who passed away in July 2017.In 2009, Branco bought back from Disney Europe rights to "Asterix at the Olympic Games" and "Asterix and Cleopatra," two popular animated films from the 1970s that he co-produced, which Disney had not owned for over 25 years. After painstaking restoration work, Branco released these movies on DVD in 2010, with English subtitles for overseas audiences. He also released on DVD "Asterix in Corsica" in 2011, which had also never been released on home video in the United States.The Asterix film is, along with "Bécassine Junior," one of the four animated shorts that comprise volume 3 of the actual Asterix series. It nevertheless remains a stand-alone short film.The short was made by René Goscinny and Albert Uderzo in 1977, the year after their success with "Astérix et Cléopâtre", and like many of their later works, it's a mixture of live action and animation. It's about Caesar's visit to Greece to hunt down the Gaulish hero Asterix, who has gone missing after having won first prize in the Olympics. The language of the short is French with English subtitles, but the film itself was first released in English-speaking countries with an English dub produced by another company entirely.The music for "Asterix at the Olympic Games" was composed by Claude Gassian, who also scored "Astérix et Cléopâtre".

Asterix and the Olympic Games was released on the 26th of March 2012.Asterix and the Olympic Games – French – 2013 – United Kingdom – – Four-disc set released on 23 September 2013, starring Gilbert Gottfried as "Hercule Gros-Gris" and Jim Broadbent as Cerebus. This version is dubbed into English with little editing. The dubbed version has no subtitles for all or any of the dialogue, but there are still English subtitles for all dubbing voices. "Note: The French release and international English dub (produced and distributed by Asterix LLC) does not contain any of the original film's features.
